A groundbreaking initiative known as the West Midlands Multibank has marked its first year of tackling child poverty in Birmingham, delivering critical support to thousands of struggling families. This innovative ‘multibank’ was established following BirminghamLive’s Child Poverty Emergency campaign, which revealed that nearly half of the city’s children live in poverty.
Spearheaded by the Birmingham Voluntary Service Council (BVSC), in partnership with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and corporate ally Amazon, the charity has already redistributed more than 492,000 essential items—including clothing, toiletries, toys, and cleaning products—through over 175,000 orders to local households across the West Midlands.
Gordon Brown, president of the Multibank, emphasized the urgency of collaborative action: “The one in two children in Birmingham who are growing up in poverty need local people, businesses—both local and national—political leaders, and charities to form new coalitions of compassion. Together, we can develop innovative solutions to build brighter, inclusive futures for them. The West Midlands Multibank’s first anniversary is a testament to the power of partnership.”

Operated by BVSC from a spacious 8,000 square foot warehouse in Saltley, the organisation salvages surplus products donated by over 160 regional partners—including schools, local charities, and community groups—and redistributes them to families in need. This not only supports low-income households in stretching their budgets but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing waste.
The charity’s efforts are bolstered by a dedicated team of local volunteers and Amazon staff seconded from its EMA4 fulfilment centre, who help sort, pack, and distribute items. Mohammed, a volunteer from Amazon said, “My experience at Multibank has been incredible. Witnessing the gratitude and positive impact on families struggling to regain stability has been truly heartwarming.”
Matt Daniels MBE, Head of Children & Families at BVSC, noted, “We’ve seen firsthand how access to essential items can transform lives. We’re proud of what the Multibank has accomplished and committed to expanding our reach in the year ahead.”
Looking forward, new VAT relief regulations coming into effect in April will simplify the process for companies to donate surplus goods directly to charities like the West Midlands Multibank, ensuring more products reach those who need them instead of being wasted.
John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager at Amazon, praised the partnership’s success and vision: “The West Midlands Multibank demonstrates what can be achieved when businesses, charities, and government unite with a common goal—to provide families with the essentials they need when they need them most. This is just the start. The more organisations that join our coalition of compassion, the greater our impact will be across the region.”
The West Midlands Multibank’s first year shows how collective community effort and strategic partnerships can create meaningful change for vulnerable children and families, fighting poverty and fostering hope in Birmingham and beyond.
