Joshua Johnson, 28, was found responsible for subjecting nine dogs to horrific neglect and starvation at his home in Ettingshall, Wolverhampton. The animals were discovered in such dire condition that five had already died, while the remaining four were so severely emaciated they were later euthanized to end their suffering.
RSPCA officers raided Johnson’s property in June 2023 following an anonymous tip-off. Upon arrival, they found the dogs living amidst rubbish and filth, with no food or water present. Five decomposing dog carcasses were uncovered, alongside four living dogs so weak they could barely stand. One female Kangal-type dog, confined behind metal bars, had her ribs, spine, and pelvis protruding starkly.
Veterinary assessments revealed that each surviving dog scored just one out of nine for body condition — with normal healthy dogs scoring between four and five. The vet detailed severe muscle wastage consistent with prolonged starvation, estimating these animals suffered for several weeks without adequate nutrition. The dogs endured intense hunger, weakness, and pain during this time.

At Birmingham Crown Court, Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering. He was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for 21 months, banned from owning animals for life, and ordered to undertake alcohol and drug rehabilitation. Additionally, he was fined £400 in costs.
Judge Roderick Henderson acknowledged the terrible cruelty involved but noted that Johnson’s actions were not from deliberate malice or sadism, but a life spiraling out of control due to substance abuse. The judge expressed a genuine hope for his rehabilitation.
RSPCA Inspector Steve Morrall described the case as deeply distressing, emphasizing that no animal should endure such prolonged suffering. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of neglect and the responsibility owed to vulnerable animals.
