An inquest has commenced into the death of Jacob McBride, a trainee firefighter from Kings Norton, who was found deceased in Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield on 15 August. Jacob, who was only 23 years old, is remembered by family and friends as having a ‘heart of gold’.
The inquest opened at Birmingham Coroner’s Court on Thursday, 3 September, with Area Coroner Emma Brown extending her condolences to Jacob’s family. The court was informed that an inquest was necessary as there was reason to suspect that Jacob’s death was unnatural.
The inquest will explore several aspects surrounding Jacob’s death, including the medical cause, his mental health condition and any treatment prior to the incident, and his intentions at the time. Evidence will also be called from police officers who were involved in a missing persons enquiry in the hours leading up to Jacob being found.

Coroner Brown stated: “Mr McBride was pronounced deceased on 15 August in Sutton Park. His identity was confirmed by his mother upon viewing.” A post-mortem examination was conducted on 28 August 2026, with toxicology results still awaited. Initial findings suggest the cause of death was hanging.
“Given the medical cause of death, there is reason to suspect it was unnatural, necessitating the inquest,” added the coroner. She confirmed that investigations into the circumstances of Jacob’s death are ongoing.
