Innocent Birmingham Boy Shot in Mistaken Identity Attack Struggles to Walk

A 15-year-old boy remains in pain and struggles to walk after being shot in the back in a mistaken identity shooting in Birmingham. The attack happened in George Street Park, Balsall Heath, shortly before 10 pm on August 2 last year.

The bullet shattered bones in his spine and caused a lung wound. Despite medical treatment, the bullet remains lodged in his body. He continues to suffer from pain, difficulty walking, and disrupted sleep. The traumatic incident has also left him fearful of leaving his home, severely impacting his daily life and preparation for his GCSE exams.

The shooter, Lamar Anderson, 22, of Heeley Road, Selly Oak, was sentenced to 16 years in prison with an additional three years extended licence at Birmingham Crown Court last week. Anderson fired the shot after a fight outside Amex Wines about 30 minutes earlier, mistakenly targeting the wrong individual while seeking revenge.

Anderson pleaded guilty to affray, wounding with intent, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. Judge Heidi Kubik KC remarked on the severity, stating, “Any penetrating chest injury can result in death. It was a matter of mere chance the physical impact was not more serious.”

Defence barrister Jasvir Mann explained Anderson’s remorse, noting he wrote an apology letter to the boy and his family. Mann highlighted the spontaneous nature of the shooting, attributing it to a heat-of-the-moment reaction due to mistaken identity. He also revealed Anderson’s troubled background, mentioning his history of instability, abuse, and impulsivity, which contributed to his poor decision-making and lack of maturity.

This tragic case underscores the devastating consequences of gun violence, with lasting effects on innocent victims and their families.
