I’m on Universal Credit – How to Claim a Free £150 Clothing Allowance and Other Benefits

A Universal Credit claimant has revealed a little-known benefit that could help many people on Universal Credit by reimbursing them up to £150 on work clothing—and that’s not all. Ray-Naomi, who recently used this allowance herself, explains how the system works and highlights additional support available for Universal Credit recipients.

Ray-Naomi shared, “If you’re on Universal Credit and you’ve just got a job, you can actually get £150 to spend on work clothes, and no one will tell you this. Basically, spend up to £150, upload your receipt to Universal Credit, and they will reimburse you—I can vouch for this because I’ve literally done this myself.”

She chose to spend her allowance at TK Maxx, describing it as an “upper class thrift store,” where she was able to find quality clothes suitable for work.

What surprised her most was that this information wasn’t communicated proactively. “Universal Credit doesn’t even tell you this—my work coach didn’t even inform me, and when I asked, he didn’t seem to know I was aware of it either,” Ray-Naomi shared.

Beyond the clothing allowance, she stressed that Universal Credit offers multiple other benefits, including free NHS prescriptions, free dental check-ups, eyesight tests, assistance with glasses or contact lenses, travel refunds for NHS appointments, discounts on bills, childcare support, and help with rent. Additionally, claimants can apply for grants to alleviate financial struggles.

To those unsure or struggling, Ray-Naomi urges, “Please do not struggle in silence because there is support—you just have to know where to ask for it.”

Responding to her video, TikTok users expressed surprise and gratitude, with one commenting, “Wow thanks,” and another admitting, “Didn’t know this all these years wow.”

For questions about travel reimbursement, Ray-Naomi advises, “Message your work coach and let them know. They should be able to reimburse your travel expenses for NHS appointments. After six months on Universal Credit, you can also get a discounted bus or tram pass—ask about that too. Hope this helps!”
