IKEA Ends Iconic MALM Range in UK Stores After Two Decades

IKEA is bidding farewell to its iconic MALM range, a best-selling flatpack furniture collection that has been a staple since its introduction in 2002. The Swedish retailer announced that the MALM line will be phased out in all UK stores, with the process beginning as early as this year.

A spokesperson from IKEA, which has a store near Birmingham, explained, “We know our products hold real significance in homes worldwide, and we’re dedicated to evolving to meet how people live today. As part of this commitment, parts of the MALM range will be retired globally as we introduce new options designed around current customer preferences and needs.”

The announcement referred to the MALM chest of drawers as “an old friend” that is now “retiring after almost 25 years,” signaling a significant shift in IKEA’s product lineup.

Reactions from customers have been mixed. Some expressed disappointment, while others shared less favorable experiences. One Reddit user said, “I had MALM chest drawers for 10 years—they were amazing. But the MALM bed I bought recently was the worst purchase of my life.” Another commented on the quality, “It creaks every time I use it, and the slats move around. It’s not sturdy.” Others noted issues with IKEA’s broader furniture range, complaining about poorly designed drawers and declining quality.

Some customers are concerned about the replacement options, lamenting that with the discontinuation of MALM and other lines like HEMNES, there are fewer appealing choices. However, IKEA insists the changes reflect evolving customer needs and trends, as it rolls out new furniture options better suited for modern lifestyles.
