An iconic element from the beloved Nemesis rollercoaster at Alton Towers was sold for an impressive £35,100 in a recent eBay auction.
Originally designed by John Wardley in 1994, Nemesis is famed for its inverted rollercoaster design, placing the track above riders' heads and leaving their feet dangling freely, offering a thrilling experience that has captivated visitors for decades.
In 2024, the ride underwent a major transformation. The £10 million refurbishment saw the attraction reimagined as Nemesis Reborn, with the entire 716-metre track rebuilt piece by piece. Components were shipped from Ohio to Staffordshire, where the ride was reassembled, now sporting a vibrant red colour scheme instead of its original black. Additionally, the queue system was redesigned, bringing significant changes to the visitor experience.

For enthusiasts of the original Nemesis, a unique opportunity arose on 23 August when Merlin’s Magic Wand, a charity associated with the park’s owners, put up for auction the original control panel from the 1994 ride. The panel, which had been used daily for decades and features both an emergency reset button and a service brake button, attracted over 100 bids. Adding to its value was the signature of John Wardley himself, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
While the new owner’s intentions for the historic control panel remain unknown, the sale marks a significant moment for collectors and fans eager to preserve a tangible piece of theme park heritage.
