I Won the European Cup with Aston Villa – Then I Became a Courier Driving Vans

Nigel Spink, the legendary goalkeeper for Aston Villa, made an unexpected career shift after an illustrious football career that spanned nearly two decades. Spink, who guarded Villa’s goals from 1977 to 1996, is best remembered for his heroic performance in the 1982 European Cup final against Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.

With just one first-team appearance prior, Spink was thrust into the spotlight when the club’s number one goalkeeper, Jimmy Rimmer, suffered an injury early in the match. Rising to the occasion, Spink delivered a stunning performance that helped Aston Villa secure a historic 1-0 victory. His name is forever etched in the club’s annals for that unforgettable night.

After making 460 appearances for Villa, Spink concluded his playing days with Forest Green Rovers in 2001, later managing the club and leading them to the FA Trophy Final. Following coaching roles at Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, and Bristol City, where he worked under Steve Bruce, Spink stepped away from professional football in 2013.

Turning a new page, Spink co-founded S&M Couriers in Sutton Coldfield, a company providing nationwide deliveries, house and office removals, and transportation services for the motor industry. He credits a friendship with Paul Munro and their shared enthusiasm for vans as the start of this new venture.

Reflecting on the transition, Spink told Birmingham Live, “After moving back to the Midlands and loading up the van with Paul, we realized we had found a great new path. We spent 18 months researching and preparing before launching the business in 2012.”

Spink enjoys the structured workweek of his courier business, which contrasts with the relentless schedule of professional football. “Working Monday to Friday is perfect. It gives me the precious weekends to spend quality time with my family, something I missed during my playing days.”

Despite leaving football behind, Spink’s passion for Aston Villa remains strong. Both he and his business partner have their vans decorated in Villa’s iconic claret and blue, a tribute to their enduring support.

As Aston Villa competes for their first European trophy since that historic 1982 triumph, Spink’s legacy continues to inspire the current squad. The team’s upcoming Europa League final against Freiburg presents a fresh opportunity for the club to add another storied chapter in European football history.
