In the whirlwind of Birmingham City’s 2017 summer transfer window, midfielder David Davis believed his time at the club had come to an end—only to be assured a new contract inside 24 hours.
That summer was marked by a significant overhaul under manager Harry Redknapp, with the Blues signing an astonishing 13 new players and investing heavily, unlike any previous window. High-profile additions like Jota, Cheikh Ndoye, David Stockdale, and Marc Roberts underscored the club’s ambition. Redknapp appeared to reserve his most notable move for last: securing former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Alex Song from Russian side Rubin Kazan.
Amid these high-profile signings, Davis was informed he could leave Birmingham City. He was on the verge of joining Derby County to reunite with ex-Blues boss Gary Rowett. However, when the Song transfer collapsed unexpectedly, so too did the plan to let Davis go.

Recounting the experience to Blue Rising, Davis explained, “When Harry came in and we signed all those players, the situation felt uncertain. On deadline day, I was told I could leave to Derby, so I was ready and waiting.”
But just as the move seemed imminent, the deal fell through. Davis continued, “I was waiting to hear if the move would happen when Harry called me and said, ‘You’re going to be a big player for us, and you’ll play every week.’”
Despite being eager to move on and potentially earn a better contract elsewhere, Davis was persuaded to stay. “I said, ‘I want a new deal because if I’m to stay, I need that assurance.’ Harry promised to sort it out,” he said.
Though Davis had signed a contract only a year earlier, the promise felt crucial. “Little did I know Harry would leave just three weeks later,” Davis added. Thankfully, his agent ensured that the promise was documented, with a signed agreement guaranteeing Davis would be offered a new deal within six months.
The episode highlights the unpredictability of football careers, especially during hectic transfer periods, and the importance of securing clear assurances when stakes are high.
