‘I Was Terrified’ – Birmingham Dad Shares Son’s Journey with Rare Dravet Syndrome Diagnosis

When Birmingham father James Thompson received the news that his young son, Oliver, had been diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, his world was turned upside down. “I was absolutely terrified,” James recalls. Dravet Syndrome is an uncommon but devastating form of epilepsy that begins in infancy and is characterized by frequent, prolonged seizures that are difficult to control.

Oliver’s diagnosis came after months of unexplained seizures and numerous hospital visits. As a progressive condition, Dravet Syndrome not only affects a child’s ability to control seizures but can also lead to developmental delays and other serious health issues. Families like the Thompsons face daily challenges as they navigate complex treatments and the emotional toll of managing a lifelong disorder.

Determined to help others understand the realities of living with Dravet Syndrome, James and his family have become advocates for awareness and research. Through community efforts and sharing their story, they hope to support other families and drive advancements in care.
