A benefit claimant recently shared their experience on Reddit after being awarded the double enhanced rate of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) following an initial rejection by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
The claimant initially received zero points in their PIP assessment, which meant they did not qualify for any payment. This came as a shock, especially since their husband, who experiences fewer physical difficulties, had successfully been awarded PIP on his first attempt.
They highlighted issues with the initial assessment, noting that the assessor had described their appearance as “well kept” despite the assessment being conducted over the phone, where no visual cues were possible. Additionally, inaccuracies in the report caused frustration, such as falsely stating that they struggled with budgeting when they had clearly explained they did not, citing their aptitude with numbers as a special interest.

Following this, the claimant and their husband filed a mandatory reconsideration, which resulted in an additional 4 points each for daily living and mobility, but still no award. Determined, they applied for a tribunal in October last year. The hearing took place on November 10 this year, nearly a year later.
During the tribunal, after only about half an hour of testimony, the panel decided to award the claimant the double enhanced rate of PIP, a decision that brought a huge emotional release and validation after a lengthy and difficult process. The claimant emphasized the importance of having support throughout the appeals process, particularly for people who struggle with communication or fatigue.
Reactions to the story on Reddit reflected broader concerns about the PIP assessment process. Some users suggested the DWP’s stringent assessments may be part of a deliberate strategy to reduce costs, citing numerous similar experiences. Others acknowledged the complexity and expense of fighting these decisions, while also expressing solidarity and hope with those currently awaiting tribunal outcomes.
This story sheds light on the hurdles many face when seeking PIP and highlights the crucial role that persistence and support from loved ones can play in securing the benefits claimants deserve.
