‘I Was a Car Thief - These Are the Models We Target’

A reformed car thief has revealed which car models are most frequently targeted by criminals, offering a crucial warning to owners to consider enhancing their vehicle security.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just high-end luxury cars that attract thieves. Michael, who is speaking anonymously, shared that the most stolen vehicles tend to be practical, everyday family cars rather than expensive models.

“Ford Fiestas and Volkswagen Golfs were always at the top of the list, along with Vauxhall Corsas,” Michael said. “Range Rover Evoques might be popular, but they were never my choice.”

Ford Fiestas, in particular, have long been the most stolen car in Britain. One reason for this is their widespread presence on UK roads, making them an abundant target. Additionally, with new Fiesta models no longer in production, the demand for parts has increased, making these vehicles even more attractive to thieves.

Michael explained that common, family-oriented cars are primarily targeted for their parts. “Most cars were stolen just for parts. If I could strip a car quickly and sell the components the same night, it meant quick money with low risk,” he said. Engines might be sold to workshops, while other parts often ended up online.

He also shared insights into what attracted his attention when choosing a car to steal. “A messy interior told me everything about the owner. If someone left their paperwork or belongings cluttered inside, it showed they didn’t think much about security. They probably didn’t have signal blockers or immobilisers, which made my job a lot easier.”

This insider perspective serves as a valuable reminder for car owners to stay vigilant and take preventative steps to protect their vehicles from theft.
