I Tried Stuffing from 7 Supermarkets and Found One Tastier and Cheaper Than Paxo

Stuffing is an essential part of any roast dinner, but is it worth paying extra for the original Paxo, or do supermarket own brands deliver just as well? To settle this, I sampled stuffing mixes from seven major UK supermarkets—Tesco, Asda, M&S, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, and Sainsbury’s—alongside Paxo, comparing them for flavour, crispiness, and price.

Paxo Sage & Onion Stuffing costs £2.50 for 170g (£1.47/100g). Though suitable for vegans, its texture was slow to crisp and the flavour came across as somewhat artificial. Our family gave it 2 out of 5 stars.

Tesco’s Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix is significantly cheaper at 45p for 170g (27p/100g). Despite the attractive price, the mix was overly herby and dry, requiring extra water to soften. It scored just 1 out of 5 stars.

Morrisons Sage & Onion Mix, priced at 75p for 170g (44p/100g), impressed with a soft texture ideal for pork rolls and a nice crisp on top. It had a well-balanced sage flavour, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

Sainsbury’s Sage & Onion Stuffing costs 90p for a larger 340g pack (27p/100g). Despite the good price, the flavour was bland and it failed to crisp well. We rated it 2 out of 5 stars.

Aldi and Lidl both price their stuffing at 45p per 170g (27p/100g). Aldi’s version was tasty with a mild herby flavour and excellent crispiness, scoring 5 out of 5 stars. Lidl’s tasted very similar despite minor ingredient differences and matched Aldi’s crispiness and flavour, also earning 5 stars.

M&S Sage & Onion Stuffing is pricier at £2.40 for 250g (96p/100g). Featuring red onion and dried apples, it seemed promising but proved runny and didn’t crisp well. We gave it 2 out of 5 stars.

Asda’s stuffing, priced like Aldi and Lidl at 45p for 170g (27p/100g), crisped beautifully and offered a pleasant herby taste, though it was slightly dry. It earned 4 out of 5 stars.

Three brands stood out above Paxo. Morrisons impressed with its soft, crisp texture; Aldi and Lidl both delivered fantastic flavour and crunch at just 45p a pack, making them unbeatable bargains. If you’re looking for value and taste, the supermarket own brands from Aldi and Lidl are the winners—not the more expensive Paxo.
