When the sun shines, ice lollies make a perfect refreshing treat for kids and adults alike. Stocking a box in your freezer is a smart way to save money compared to buying from corner shops or ice cream vans. But which supermarket offers the best budget ice lollies? And how do they stack up against the iconic Walls Calippo?
To find out, I picked up budget ice lollies from seven major supermarkets: Sainsbury’s, Asda, Tesco, M&S, Aldi, Lidl, and Morrisons. Enlisting the help of my family, we rated each on price, flavor, size, and sugar content. Here’s what we discovered.
Walls Calippo Minis – Tesco (£2.90 for 5, 58p each)
Available in orange and lime, these lollies offer two refreshing flavors with 14g and 12g sugar respectively per 84g lolly. Made with fruit juice concentrates and natural flavorings, the lime variety stood out for its zingy, fresh fruit taste. The stick format is convenient, keeping hands clean. We rated Walls 4 out of 5 stars.

Tesco Ms Molly’s Assorted Fruit Lollies – (£1.15 for 8, 14p each)
Orange, strawberry, and lemon varieties contained high sugar levels (14.5–17.1g per 100g) but ultimately tasted watery and bland. These lollies lacked any satisfying flavor. We gave them 1 out of 5 stars.
M&S Super Loop Lollies – (£2.50 for 5, 50p each)
These swirly strawberry-orange-pineapple lollies were creamy, luxurious, and refreshing with 9.5g sugar per 50g. The only downside was the small stick and tendency to fall apart, creating a mess. Rated 4 out of 5 stars.
Morrisons Savers Fruit Flavoured Lollies – (£1.15 for 8, 14p each)
Lemon, orange, and strawberry flavours contained 4.7g to 4.9g sugar per 35g but tasted like sugary, colored ice water. Kids found them ‘rank.’ They earned just 1 out of 5 stars.
Sainsbury’s Stamford Street Co. Fruit Flavour Lollies – (£1.25 for 8, 14p each)
Similar savers range flavors with slightly better taste, especially the tangy strawberry. However, mostly orange and lemon lollies limited the appeal. Overall, 3 out of 5 stars.
Lidl Gelatelli Tropical Tornados – (£1.55 for 5, 31p each)
With a fun twister shape and a vibrant mix of fruit juices including pineapple, passionfruit, mango, and strawberry, these lollies impressed with natural colors and flavors. Each 85g lolly had 17.9g sugar but was very satisfying and mess-free. A favorite—5 out of 5 stars.
Asda Just Essentials Fruit Flavour Lollies – (£1.14 for 8, 14p each)
Strawberry was overly sweet and artificial, but the lemon was perfectly zesty without excess sugar. Balanced at 53 calories and 11g sugar per 100g, these earned 3 out of 5 stars for consistent quality.
Aldi Giannis Fruit Sticks Forest Fruits – (£2.29 for 12, 19p each)
Bursting with deep blackcurrant flavor and rich texture, these 50g lollies combined fruit juices and natural flavoring with 10g sugar. Larger than most budget options, they stayed frozen without mess and delivered great value. Our top pick with 5 out of 5 stars.
Price Overview:
Cheapest lollies came from Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, and Sainsbury’s at around 14p each. Walls and M&S were pricier, 58p and 50p respectively. Aldi and Lidl’s options positioned in the middle at 19p and 31p each.
Final Verdict:
While M&S lollies are a luxe occasional treat, Lidl and Aldi stood out for flavor and quality. Between them, Aldi gave the best overall value—bigger size, richer taste, and affordable price. Perfect for family summer days and sharing with friends.
