I Tried Eight Jars of Cranberry Sauce and Loved the Cheapest at Just 49p for Christmas Day

A Christmas dinner isn’t truly complete without a generous helping of cranberry sauce. But with so many options on supermarket shelves, which one stands out as the best?

To find out, I put eight jars of cranberry sauce to the test, comparing Ocean Spray with offerings from Sainsbury’s, Asda, Tesco, M&S, Aldi, Lidl, and Morrisons. I examined the ingredients, nutritional values, price, and most importantly, taste.

Ocean Spray, a well-known brand, costs £1.25 for 200g (63p per 100g). It contains just four ingredients—sugar, 30% cranberries, 15% cranberry puree, and water—and is free from artificial colours, flavourings, and sweeteners. It is gluten-free, vegetarian-friendly, and packs 152 calories with 33g of sugar per 100g. The sauce was firm and bursting with whole cranberries, delivering a sharp, seed-filled bite. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars.

Tesco’s cranberry sauce, priced at a fraction of Ocean Spray’s cost—just 49p for 200g (25p per 100g)—stood out. With 47% cranberries, sugar, glucose-fructose syrup, pectins, and acidity regulators, it’s vegan-friendly and free from artificial additives. It offers 31 calories and 6.8g sugars per tablespoon. Hard-set with abundant cranberry slices rather than whole berries, it spread easily and delivered a lovely sharp tang without bitterness. This was my top pick, earning 5 out of 5 stars.

Morrisons’ smooth cranberry sauce, costing £1.50 for 200g (75p per 100g), consisted of 45% cranberry puree, sugar, and water. While free from artificial colours and flavours and containing only 24 calories with 5.5g sugars per tablespoon, it lacked some flavour punch. I rated it 3 stars.

Sainsbury’s offered a vegan-friendly sauce at 69p for 250g (28p per 100g), made with 45% cranberries, sugar, and water. It required quite a bit of stirring and was a bit too sweet with a seedy texture. I gave it 3 stars.

Lidl and Aldi both offered excellent value at 49p for 200g (25p per 100g) each. Lidl’s recipe included sugar, 35% whole cranberries, water, and 10% cranberry puree. It was sharp, dark, and seeded—very similar to Ocean Spray—and earned 4 stars. Aldi’s version had the same ingredient makeup but tasted sweeter and more like a jam, with 3 stars.

M&S charged £1 for 200g (50p per 100g), crafting theirs with sugar, 40% cranberries, water, concentrated cranberry juice, and cornflour. Smooth and glossy, it resembled a pink jam but tasted overly sweet with an aftertaste I didn’t enjoy. I rated it 3 stars.

Asda’s was priced at 51p for 200g (26p per 100g) and used 47% cranberries with sugar, glucose-fructose syrup, and acidity regulators. Suitable for vegetarians and free from artificial colours and fats, it was pale, very firm, and somewhat bitter, earning just 2 stars.

Overall, Tesco’s cranberry sauce was the clear winner—it offered the best balance of taste, texture, and price, costing just 49p for 200g. This made it an excellent value alternative to the more expensive jars from Ocean Spray, Morrisons, and M&S.
