Christmas just isn’t complete without a chocolate yule log, but prices and quality vary widely across supermarkets. To find the most delicious and cost-effective option for my family, I purchased yule logs from Asda, Tesco, M&S, Aldi, and Sainsbury’s.
With the kids eager to help, we rated each log based on price, appearance, taste, and chocolate content. The outcome was surprising: one of the pricier yule logs offered the best value overall.
Here’s what we found:

Tesco Chocolate Yule Log
Price: £2.95 for 260g (£1.14 per 100g); 37p per slice (serves 8)
Contains 31% buttercream and 23% milk chocolate, with 135 calories, 3.5g saturated fat, 14.2g sugar, and 0.11g salt per slice.
This log featured a pleasant sponge and quality hard chocolate coating but could have had more buttercream. We gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Sainsbury’s Yule Log
Price: £2.95 for 240g (£1.23 per 100g); 37p per slice (serves 8)
With 24% milk chocolate, each serving contains 137 calories, 4.1g saturated fat, 11.6g sugar, and 0.10g salt.
The chocolate coating tasted cheap, the sponge was mediocre, and it lacked buttercream, earning just 1 out of 5 stars.
Aldi Specially Selected Yule Log
Price: £5.45 for 453g (£1.20 per 100g); 68p per slice (larger slices, serves 8)
Containing 11% milk chocolate and 3% Belgian milk chocolate, each slice has 274 calories, 9.4g saturated fat, 25.2g sugar, and 0.25g salt.
This indulgent log boasted creamy chocolate fudge icing, a dusting of icing sugar resembling snow, and generous chocolate buttercream swirls. The sponge was delicious, and my son found it “scrumdiddlyumptious.” A perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
M&S Belgian Chocolate Yule Log
Price: £8 for 495g (£1.60 per 100g); £1.30 per slice (serves 6)
Made with 13% milk chocolate, 2.5% Belgian milk chocolate, and 2.5% dark chocolate, each serving packs 378 calories, 12.2g saturated fat, 40.3g sugar, and 0.41g salt—making it the richest option.
With spectacular creamy chocolate fudge swirls and a light sponge, it was heavenly but very rich—small slices suffice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars.
Asda Chocolate Yule Log
Price: £2.96 for 240g (£1.23 per 100g); 37p per slice (serves 8)
Contains 31% buttercream and 24% milk chocolate, with 128 calories, 3.5g saturated fat, 13g sugar, and 0.09g salt per serving.
Disappointingly dry sponge and minimal buttercream made this one fall short, earning 2 out of 5 stars.
The standout finding was that Aldi’s Specially Selected yule log, despite being pricier upfront, actually offered better value per 100g than the basic Sainsbury’s and Asda options. The quality, rich flavor, and generous portions made it the clear winner.
While M&S delivered an indulgent experience, the premium price wasn’t justified for everyday enjoyment. For this Christmas, Aldi’s Specially Selected Chocolate Yule Log will be my family’s go-to festive treat.
