Richard Perry, 46, had always loved football but felt uncomfortable wearing his club’s shirt due to his weight. After years of struggling with self-consciousness and a sedentary lifestyle, Richard decided it was time for a change. With determination and the support of Slimming World, he has impressively shed 13 stone 4.5 pounds.
“I’d been unhappy with my weight for a long time, but I didn’t know how to change things,” Richard shares. “I couldn’t play the game I loved, and there was no way I’d be caught wearing a too-tight football shirt.”
Taking a leap of faith, Richard joined his local Slimming World group, where the welcoming environment provided the encouragement he desperately needed. “Walking into my local Slimming World group was a big step for me, but the welcome I got from my Consultant Tracey and the group members made all the difference. There was no judgment, just real support from people who understood exactly how I felt.”

Richard’s journey didn’t just involve weight loss; it also transformed his lifestyle. The group became his weekly anchor, offering a space to discuss challenges and plan ahead with others on similar paths. “The group became my weekly reset. Talking through challenges, planning the week ahead and knowing I wasn’t doing it alone kept me accountable.”
One of the most rewarding aspects of Richard’s transformation was discovering he could still enjoy the meals he loved. “I could still enjoy proper meals like full-English breakfasts, roast dinners, homemade curries, and chili con carne while losing weight. I never felt restricted, which made it much easier to stick with it.”
As his confidence grew, Richard embraced Slimming World’s active lifestyle program, which encouraged him to gradually increase his physical activity. “Tracey talked about the benefits of being more active and how it supports long-term weight loss, so I thought, ‘Why not give it a go?’ I started with short walks and now I’m regularly swimming, cycling, hiking, and running. I actually look forward to getting out and being active.”
Now 13 stone lighter, Richard proudly represented his community at the 2026 Man of the Year semi-finals hosted by Slimming World at their Derbyshire head office. “I love football, so watching the World Cup this year over 13 stone lighter has been an amazing feeling,” he says. “I can wear a football shirt without feeling self-conscious. I used to wear a size 4XL, and now I can comfortably wear a medium. Those small changes make such a big difference to your life—you don’t realize it until you look back and see how much you used to shy away from things.”
Tracey Richardson, Richard’s Slimming World Consultant who runs the Tipton group, expressed immense pride in his progress. “We’re incredibly proud of Richard. He’s shown that with the right support, food, and mindset, anything is possible. Slimming World is all about community, and no one has to do it alone. Whether someone is starting from scratch or using weight-loss medication, we help members build healthy habits around real food, activity, and support to maintain their weight loss long-term. Win, lose, or draw – our group will always be there to cheer you on.”
Richard’s inspiring journey highlights how courage, community, and a passion for life can lead to remarkable change.
