‘I expose catfishes and romance scammers – women are being lied to and manipulated every day’

Behind the polished profiles and sweet promises on online dating sites lies a hidden world of deception and heartbreak—a world that Midlands private investigator Dan Anderson knows all too well.

Every day, Dan and his team at Anderson & Co are contacted by women desperate to uncover the truth after being cruelly deceived by those they thought were genuine partners. These predators manipulate victims emotionally and financially, leaving many devastated and drained of their savings.

Dan warns that these cases are alarmingly common and widespread. “Fraud is not isolated,” he says. “It’s happening in towns and cities across the country, affecting communities everywhere.”

Dan’s journey—from living out of his car and surviving on meal deals to founding his own successful private investigation firm in Birmingham—reflects his passion for uncovering the truth others can’t.

“I started Anderson & Co in late 2019 after years as a surveillance agent,” Dan recalls. “Running the business was a big risk—I had no clients initially, no business management experience, and then Covid changed everything.”

Despite the challenges, Dan kept his firm alive and thriving, growing into one of the UK’s leading private investigation companies. While early work focused on infidelity and dodgy traders, Dan explains that fraud investigations—especially involving catfishing and romance scams—now dominate their caseload.

“Our team handles multiple fraud cases daily, mainly involving women who suspect they’ve been targeted by romance fraudsters,” Dan says. “These criminals are professional deceivers, often using fake passports, IDs, and qualifications bought online to stay one step ahead.”

Despite repeated attempts, Dan says dating apps have largely ignored offers to collaborate and improve verification processes—leaving victims vulnerable.

Sadly, police investigations are limited and many victims don’t get timely answers. “Most women reaching out to us want immediate clarity,” Dan explains. “Yet, we only see a fraction of those affected. Many more are being scammed but remain silent out of embarrassment or shame.”

Dan urges the public to trust their instincts. “If something feels off, it usually is. These fraudsters are skilled manipulators, so exercise caution when dealing with strangers, especially online.”

For those facing such deception, Dan emphasizes that private investigators can help. “Often, contacting a PI is a last resort, but it’s a valuable option to uncover the truth before things escalate.”

Above all, Dan’s message is clear: be vigilant, trust your gut, and know that help is available to expose these dangerous scammers and protect the vulnerable.
