In the weeks following the introduction of new traffic enforcement measures in Birmingham, hundreds of drivers have been fined for breaching road rules. Since cameras were activated in June, motorists have been caught making banned turns on some of the city’s busiest roads, actions previously going unpunished.
The city council has placed particular focus on the junction of Newhall Street and Great Charles Queensway, where the vast majority of fines have been issued. Between June and July, a total of 453 penalties were handed out at this location for illegal turns into Great Charles Queensway from both directions.
Additionally, a smaller number of fines have been issued for right turns into Priory Road from Bristol Road. These enforcement efforts form part of a broader road safety initiative across Birmingham, which includes reducing speed limits to 30mph on most busy roads and installing new speed cameras.

Former transport boss at Birmingham City Council, Councillor Majid Mahmood, highlighted the aims of these measures earlier this year: “These new powers will help to make our roads safer by reducing dangerous driving behaviours like making banned turns. It will also allow for more effective local control over traffic flow and safety.”
Many drivers have been surprised to receive fines through the post as the council cracks down on previously overlooked traffic violations with the aim of improving safety and managing traffic more effectively around the city.
