How to Keep Your Bedroom Cool at Night with a Simple Towel Trick

As summer approaches in the UK, warm days often come with hot, uncomfortable nights that disrupt our restful sleep. Tossing and turning due to overheating is a common struggle when temperatures remain high after dark.

Many turn to fans for relief, but fans can be noisy, disturb your sleep, and increase electricity bills. Moreover, fans can circulate dust and pollen, which may cause allergies or a stuffy atmosphere in the bedroom.

Fortunately, John Lawless from Best Heating has revealed a clever, eco-friendly trick to cool your bedroom using just a damp towel. Here’s how it works:

John explains, “If you hang a cold, damp towel or sheet in front of an open window, the warm air passing through it is cooled before entering your room.”

During the day, sunlight warms up the air near windows, which often gets trapped inside when curtains or blinds are closed at night. The damp towel absorbs this heat through evaporation, which requires energy, thereby pulling heat from the air and lowering the room temperature naturally.

To try this at home:

  1. Fill a sink or bowl with cold water and soak a towel until it’s damp but not dripping wet. An overly soaked towel might block airflow and make the room feel stuffy instead of fresh.

  2. Hang the damp towel in front of an open window to allow air to flow through it. Even a slight breeze will improve its cooling effect.

  3. If you like, you can also hang a towel in a doorway to enhance air circulation.

When the towel dries out, simply re-wet it to continue enjoying a cooler, more comfortable bedroom environment throughout the night.

This simple, cost-free method can help you sleep better during warm nights without the noise or expense of electrical devices.
