HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has initiated a series of checks on UK households’ income tax records, with the process expected to be completed by November. The tax authority has responded publicly to inquiries on social media regarding tax refunds and the timeline for these checks.
A taxpayer recently reached out to HMRC on X, formerly known as Twitter, asking, “I already know I am entitled to one and roughly how much, but how long will it take you to confirm it?” HMRC replied that they will be reviewing PAYE records for the 2025/2026 tax year starting in June.
HMRC clarified their timeline, stating, “We aim to complete our checks by November. If you’re due a refund, you’ll be able to claim it online through your personal tax account.”

Taxpayers can check how much Income Tax they have paid for the period from April 6, 2024, to April 5, 2025, once their tax calculations are finalized. HMRC conducts these Income Tax reviews between June and November each year but notes some exceptions.
Specifically, “You cannot check your Income Tax for last year if you paid any part of your Income Tax through Self Assessment.” Those who qualify may use the online service to claim refunds or make additional payments, provided they have a tax calculation letter, known as a ‘P800,’ confirming their eligibility.
To use the HMRC online services, users must sign in with personal credentials or create an account if they do not already have one. Verification of identity may be required to protect personal information, often involving photo ID such as a passport or driving licence.
If you encounter difficulties creating a personal tax account, HMRC advises contacting their support team. Additionally, taxpayers can estimate their Income Tax for previous years without signing in.
For those looking to check their Income Tax payments for the current tax year, different methods are available.
