HMRC Confirms Tax-Free Childcare Scheme Could Provide Up to £2,000 per Child for Working Parents

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has confirmed that working parents across the UK could receive financial support of up to £2,000 per child through the Tax-Free Childcare scheme. This government initiative is designed to assist families in managing their childcare expenses.

Eligible families must earn under £100,000 per year and have a child aged under 11, or under 16 if the child has a disability. The scheme’s benefits can be applied towards a range of childcare options, including school clubs, childminders, wraparound care during term time, and holiday clubs or activities.

Under the scheme, the government contributes £2 for every £8 a parent pays into their Tax-Free Childcare account, up to a maximum of £2,000 per child annually. For children with disabilities, the limit increases to £4,000 per year. Parents can set up an account online and are required to reconfirm their eligibility every three months to continue receiving support.

According to recent data, around 602,000 families were benefiting from Tax-Free Childcare, supporting 745,000 children as of June 2026. Payments can be made into the account via Direct Debit, standing order, or bank transfer. Typically, funds reach the account within one working day, with the government’s contribution added simultaneously. Parents can then use the funds to pay their childcare providers directly.

It is important for parents to log into their childcare account every three months to verify their eligibility; failure to do so will result in suspension of the scheme’s payments. This initiative continues to be a valuable resource enabling working families to balance employment and childcare costs effectively.
