Berryfields Farm, a family-run enterprise with over 90 years of history located in Meriden, has submitted an application for full planning permission to convert part of an existing agricultural building into a children’s day nursery. The proposed facility aims to accommodate over 100 children, ranging from babies to pre-school age.
This development is the latest step in diversifying the Berkswell Road site, which already includes a farm shop, restaurant, and a 33-bedroom hotel approved by Solihull planners in 2023. Previously, Solihull planners granted prior approval for a nursery on the site along with associated parking on adjacent land-a plan described by the applicant as the “fallback option”. This prior approval was given despite strong objections from Meriden Parish Council.
Tom Barber, the operations director, emphasised the importance of the proposal in a planning statement accompanying the application. He noted that Berryfields Farm originated as a pig breeding and rearing business but has successfully diversified to ensure long-term sustainability. The farm has evolved into an award-winning rural enterprise serving the local community.
The proposed development involves demolishing a lean-to extension attached to the existing agricultural building to create dedicated outdoor play areas for the nursery. Additionally, six redundant agricultural buildings south of the main barn are planned for demolition to provide suitable access, parking, and turning spaces.
The nursery is intended to operate Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm, catering to up to 120 children. The applicant highlights that approval of this application would support economic growth, benefit local communities, and create employment opportunities.
As part of the planning process, public consultation is underway, with a deadline for submissions set for 24 September.
