Historic Birmingham Hotel Reopens as Empress African Restaurant

After standing vacant for nearly a decade, the 1920s-era Dogpool Hotel in Birmingham is poised to reopen its doors, this time as Empress African Restaurant, a dynamic new dining destination celebrating modern African hospitality.

Located on Pershore Road in Stirchley, the iconic building will welcome guests starting Saturday, November 22. While part of the premises has operated as an African supermarket during renovations, diners will soon be able to enjoy freshly prepared West African and European-inspired dishes in a welcoming, historic setting.

Co-founders and culinary visionaries Oyetola and Olusegun Akande have led the transformation. Head chef Oyetola specializes in blending West African traditions with European fine dining techniques to create an immersive cultural experience. “We want every guest to feel transported — to experience the pride of Nigerian culture alongside first-class service,” she explains.

Olusegun discovered the abandoned Dogpool Hotel earlier this year and saw its potential beyond just the building itself. “Our mission was to revive this space with life, flavor, and purpose,” he says. “The Dogpool Hotel holds a special place in the hearts of locals, and we’re proud to give it a fresh chapter filled with positivity, creativity, and culture.”

Already beloved at its Cecil Street location in Newtown, Empress has garnered rave reviews for its exceptional food and impeccable customer service. Birmingham residents can now look forward to experiencing the same quality and spirit at 1063 Pershore Road, Stirchley, B30 2YJ — a revitalized landmark breathing new life into the community through authentic cuisine and cultural celebration.
