Hidden Gems: Charming Villages Among the Best Places to Live in the Midlands

The leafy villages of the West Midlands stand out as some of the most prosperous and desirable places to live in the region. These tranquil communities boast a standard of living well above the regional average, providing a stark contrast to many urban areas nearby.

Recent studies highlight pockets of minimal poverty in these villages, underscoring their financial stability and quality of life. Residents here generally do not face the financial hardships common in some parts of Birmingham, where concerns about basic necessities remain a daily reality.

One notable area is South Staffordshire, located west of Dudley and north of Wolverhampton. If this name isn’t familiar, you might not have heard of some of its charming villages like Penkridge, Codsall, and Kinver. These locations are highly sought after for their excellent schools, low crime rates, and peaceful surroundings. The average house price here hovers around £307,000, reflecting the desirability of the area.

Other affluent Midlands districts include Bromsgrove and Lichfield, both known for their exceptionally low deprivation levels and strong community appeal.

In contrast, Birmingham faces significant challenges. Nearly half of its neighborhoods are classified as experiencing high deprivation levels. In fact, the six poorest areas in England are all within Birmingham, with Sparkhill North topping the list as the most deprived place in the country. The others include Sparkbrook South, Small Heath Park, Saltley East, Washwood Heath, and Bordesley Green.

This divide illustrates a common pattern where affluent residents gravitate towards suburban or rural fringes of large cities. These suburbs offer quiet, safe, and upscale living environments while maintaining convenient access to urban amenities for work, education, shopping, and entertainment.
