Hidden Gem Under Digbeth Arches: Griffins Gaming Draws Overnight Queues and Builds Community

Nestled beneath the railway arches behind the O2 Institute in Digbeth, Griffins Gaming has become a local hotspot for trading card enthusiasts and gamers alike. Since opening in July 2023, this family-run shop tucked away on Rea Court has drawn overnight queues as fans eagerly await the latest rare card releases.

Griffins Gaming blends a retail space with a vibrant community hub. Visitors can browse extensive selections of trading cards—including Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, One Piece, Star Wars: Shatterpoint, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Digimon—available in mystery packs or as single cards secured in high-value display cabinets. Some of these single cards can be worth thousands of pounds, reflecting the booming trading card market fueled by online demand and collector interest.

The shop serves a diverse crowd: serious collectors hunting prized cards, casual players seeking camaraderie, and even those scouting deals for resale. Its co-owners, Eddie Griffiths and Michelle Bolton, run the venue as a welcoming space where players of all ages can connect, including their own children who have found friendships through the shop’s friendly atmosphere.

Trading card games surged in popularity during the pandemic, and Griffins saw its community grow steadily since its relocation from Erdington. The shop is open for casual play most afternoons and evenings during the week, with extended sessions on weekends. Regular events and sanctioned tournaments offer competitive play opportunities with prizes, while casual play at the numerous tables remains entirely free.

Michelle highlights the unique social value of Griffins Gaming: “You can go to a pub and have a drink, but here, people share a genuine passion for these games and the stories behind them. It’s where friendships form over discussions about favourite Pokémon or new anime episodes, lighting up people’s faces and sparking hours of conversation.”

The inclusive atmosphere is especially important for neurodivergent individuals who may find it challenging to connect elsewhere. At Griffins, they can be themselves without the pressure to conform. Michelle and Eddie actively foster this supportive environment by personally introducing newcomers to others who share their interests, making the shop a trusted “bridge” into the community.

Despite its popularity, Griffins has faced challenges—including a break-in earlier this year when thieves attempted to steal valuable cards—and occasional conflicts during busy release days. However, Michelle emphasizes the diverse customer base and buying habits they observe: from those who enjoy the thrill of opening packs, to ones who meticulously search for the most coveted cards, to others who come solely to view or trade valuable singles.

The shop also buys single cards from traders, safely storing the most valuable ones in secure cabinets. Proceeds help fund the shop’s community activities and events, which are complemented by artwork created by local players decorating the space.

For Michelle, Griffins Gaming is more than a business—it’s a family. “Most days it’s a joy to come to work and see familiar faces. Our customers celebrate birthdays together; they become part of our extended family.”

Griffins Gaming is located at Rea Court, 40 Trent Street, Digbeth, B5 5NL, welcoming new visitors eager to discover a thriving community hidden beneath the arches.
