A new weight restriction on the A5 through Towcester town centre will soon prohibit vehicles over 7.5 tonnes from using this busy stretch of road. National Highways introduced the ban to address concerns about traffic congestion, excessive noise, poor air quality, and safety in the historic town centre.
The restriction applies along the A5 between the Cow Pastures Lane roundabout and the Old Tiffield Road junction. New signage advising drivers of the weight limit has already been installed throughout the area.
Andrew Jinks, Midlands Regional Director at National Highways, explained that the restriction follows the opening of the Towcester Relief Road, built by Persimmon. “With the new relief road completed, we can now proceed with our plan for a weight restriction on the A5 to tackle issues raised by residents and businesses regarding congestion, noise, and vibrations from large vehicles,” he said.

This initiative marks the first phase of ongoing efforts by National Highways to reduce heavy vehicle traffic on the A5. Further measures are planned later this year to enhance traffic flow and safety in Towcester’s town centre.
Importantly, certain vehicles are exempt from the ban. Emergency vehicles, buses, coaches, recovery vehicles attending incidents, and delivery vehicles servicing residents, shops, and businesses are all permitted to continue using the restricted stretch.
Cllr Richard Butler, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at West Northamptonshire Council, highlighted the benefits for both residents and drivers. “The restriction will divert many heavy vehicles away from the high street, creating a cleaner, quieter, and more pleasant environment for everyone. HGV drivers will also benefit by avoiding narrow urban roads with multiple traffic lights,” he said.
This new weight limit is an important step toward creating a safer, more welcoming Towcester while improving quality of life for residents and business owners alike.
