Heatwave Brings Rise in Fraud Attempts, Warn West Mercia Police

As the region experiences a summer heatwave, West Mercia Police have issued a strong warning about an increase in fraudulent schemes targeting residents. Criminals are leveraging the current heatwave by offering seemingly attractive deals that are often “too good to be true,” particularly on items such as air conditioners and fans.

According to the force’s economic crime unit, scammers are taking advantage of popular demand by advertising inexpensive cooling appliances, sometimes falsely bearing well-known brand names. These illicit offers often include urgent time-limited discounts designed to pressure buyers into quick decisions without adequate background checks.

Additionally, fraudsters have been known to replicate genuine websites, including those of reputable retailers like Aldi, to lend credibility to their deceptive sales and lure unsuspecting consumers.

West Mercia Police urge the public to exercise caution when approached with such offers. Important advice includes scrutinising websites carefully for spelling mistakes, being wary of unusually low prices and rapid expiry promotions, and refraining from providing financial information unless certain of the seller’s legitimacy.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant to protect themselves amid the surge in scam activity linked to the heatwave. The police also invite anyone who has been affected by these scams to come forward and share their experiences.
