A community is in mourning following the death of 19-year-old Rhys Hanks, who was fatally injured in a serious car crash in the Midlands. The accident occurred on Wednesday, May 20, when the white Vauxhall Corsa Rhys was riding in struck a tree on Station Road, Great Dalby, Leicestershire, shortly after 8:45 pm.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Rhys was pronounced dead at the scene. The car’s 18-year-old driver was hospitalized with serious injuries, and two passengers in the back sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Leicestershire Police.
Rhys' family has expressed deep sorrow and heartbreak over the loss of their beloved son and brother. In a touching statement, they described Rhys as an “amazing, caring, loving, thoughtful, and kind” young man who was cherished by family and friends alike. They emphasized his boundless potential and how proud they were of the person he had become. “We’re lost for words. You’ll always and forever be in our hearts,” the family said, highlighting the profound impact Rhys had on those around him.

Leicestershire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is appealing to the public for any information or dashcam footage related to the incident. Detective Constable Emma Neeves urged witnesses or motorists who might have seen the collision or the vehicle beforehand to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
