Headteacher Reveals Heartbreaking Reality of Child Poverty in Birmingham

Tania Yasmin, executive headteacher at Greet Primary School in Sparkhill, Birmingham, has revealed some of the most distressing examples of child poverty she has witnessed throughout her 30-year career.

Speaking with BirminghamLive, Tania described her shock at the minimal contents of some children’s packed lunches. “One of the most consistently shocking things is opening the lunchboxes of children who bring packed lunches and seeing how little they actually contain,” she said.

Many of these children come from working families who do not qualify for the government’s Free School Meals (FSM) scheme currently available in England. While all state primary school pupils in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 receive free lunches, from Year 3 onward, eligibility depends on household benefits. The government plans to expand FSM eligibility in England this September to include all pupils whose families receive Universal Credit.

Tania shared a particularly upsetting moment from her time teaching at another Birmingham school. She noticed a child slipping something into their pocket during lunchtime. When she asked if the child had eaten, he claimed he had, but his lunchbox was empty. Upon gently questioning him in private, the child revealed a plastic bag containing a single slice of bread—his entire lunch. This child had hidden the bread out of embarrassment.

The school responded immediately by providing a hot meal and conducting safeguarding checks. Tania highlighted that this child came from a working family, which disqualified him from free meals despite a clear need.

Stories like this impact Tania deeply, sometimes bringing her to tears as she grapples with the realities of the cost-of-living crisis that are forcing families and children into poverty. Yet, she remains determined, channeling her emotions into finding ways to support and make a difference for these vulnerable children every day.
