Harborne Man’s Cholesterol Test Uncovers Hidden Cancer

Simon Key, 64, from Harborne, Birmingham, recently experienced how a simple cholesterol test led to a life-changing cancer diagnosis. A strong advocate for regular health screenings, Simon is urging others in the city to prioritize their well-being.

Simon attended a Heart Research UK testing clinic in Birmingham on March 24, initially to check his cholesterol levels. However, the test revealed a raised PSA (prostate-specific antigen), a key indicator used to detect prostate issues such as cancer or enlargement.

“Without that cholesterol check, I would never have known about my prostate cancer,” Simon shared. “I could have been unaware and the cancer might have continued to grow inside me.”

Reflecting on his journey, Simon emphasized how critical it is to get regular health screenings. “It shocks me that many people avoid health checks,” he said. “These tests are there to help, not to harm. If you get checked early, you can catch problems before they become serious.”

Simon, who had his prostate removed last year, continues to monitor his health closely. At the Heart Research UK event, he reported no surprises from his recent check: “I’m on statins, so my cholesterol was good. My blood pressure was slightly high but manageable, and I keep a close watch on it.”

His message is clear—regular health tests can uncover hidden issues and save lives. “Get out there and get your health checked. It’s always worth double-checking.”
