Halifax to Close 26 Branches Across UK This October Including Birmingham Location

Halifax is set to close 26 branches across the UK before the end of October, including one in the West Midlands. The announcement was confirmed via Link, a service that provides updates on cash access nationwide.

These branch closures form part of a wider trend as more customers transition to online banking using websites and apps. Halifax, owned by Lloyds Banking Group since 2009, is also transferring all its customers to Lloyds’ digital banking platform. From November 1, Halifax’s own digital services will be discontinued, requiring existing users to move to Lloyds online and mobile banking.

Lloyds states it regularly reviews how customers prefer to bank and has introduced banking hubs in collaboration with Cash Access UK and the Post Office to replace traditional branch services.

However, the reduction in physical bank branches has raised concerns among campaigners and some community members. Critics argue that the closures disproportionately affect elderly and vulnerable customers who rely on in-person services. South Devon MP Caroline Voaden highlighted the loss of 6,000 bank and building society branches nationally in the past decade, calling attention to the impact on those unable to access online banking.

In some areas, such as the Devon town of Totnes, residents have reported diminished independence due to the distance required to reach alternative banking facilities.

Although Link has stated that people continue to have “good access to cash” through post offices and ATMs, the shift marks a significant change in the UK’s banking landscape.

Customers holding accounts with Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland can continue to use any of their branches for banking needs during and after this transition.

The branch closure process officially began on October 5.
