Halfords has raised serious concerns for over 1.2 million drivers in the UK who could face a £1,000 fine and six points on their driving licence for driving without a valid MOT. This alarming figure highlights a significant public safety risk on UK roads.
The popular garage retailer, with locations including Birmingham, unearthed data indicating that as many as 1.2 million vehicles may currently be operating without a valid MOT certificate. This lapse potentially endangers both drivers and other road users.
Halfords further revealed that approximately 3% of UK motorists admit to having skipped their annual MOT in the past year. The issue is especially pronounced among younger drivers, with 6% of Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) confessing to missing their MOT tests. In contrast, only 2% of Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) have done so.

Andy Turbefield, Halfords’ Motoring Expert, emphasized the risks of avoiding this essential vehicle check: “Financial pressures might tempt some to skip their MOT, but this is a false economy. The penalties can be severe, including fines and points on your licence. Worse, if you are involved in an accident without a valid MOT, your insurance may be invalidated, leading to far greater financial loss.”
He added that many MOT failures stem from minor, inexpensive issues such as blown bulbs or low screenwash fluid. To help drivers stay compliant, Halfords offers members of its free Motoring Club a complimentary 10-point car check to identify potential problems ahead of their MOT, along with £5 off their MOT service. For added benefits, the premium membership costs £54 and includes a free MOT plus savings valued between £10 and £130, making vehicle maintenance more affordable.
According to GOV.UK, driving without a valid MOT can result in a maximum fine of £1,000. While the DVLA and DVSA cannot take direct action against vehicles without an MOT, the police will investigate reports and enforce penalties where applicable.
