Guinness Prices Set to Rise Amid Business Costs and Strategic Shakeup

Guinness lovers will soon face higher prices when ordering their favorite stout, as Diageo, the maker of Guinness, prepares to increase prices from April 1. The wholesale cost of Guinness Draught is expected to rise by 5.2%, translating to an approximate 4p increase per pint on the retail price.

The average cost of a pint of Guinness in the UK has already climbed to £5.41 this year, marking a 15% rise from £4.71 in 2025, according to UK Debt Expert data. This change adds further pressure on UK households still grappling with rising living costs.

A Diageo spokesperson attributed the price hike to the “rising cost of doing business,” emphasizing that the company has kept the increase minimal despite supply chain challenges.

These adjustments come as Diageo’s new CEO, Sir Dave Lewis, aims to revitalize the company’s performance with a fresh strategy set to be revealed later this summer. Sir Dave stressed the importance of decisive action to boost competitiveness and expand the product portfolio to spur growth.

In a recent statement, Sir Dave outlined plans to create financial flexibility by reducing the dividend, a move designed to strengthen the company’s balance sheet and secure its position as a leading global spirits business.

Industry expert Julie Palmer, managing partner at BTG, highlighted the tough challenges facing Diageo, including rising energy, ingredient, employer, and tariff costs, alongside shifting consumer preferences away from alcohol. She noted that the company must adapt by focusing on lower-cost and low- or no-alcohol alternatives and improving efficiency to maintain profitability and cash flow over the long term.
