Greggs Permanently Closes Popular Monmouth Store Following Severe Flooding

Greggs has announced the permanent closure of its Monnow Street store in Monmouth, a move that has left many shoppers saddened and frustrated. The bakery chain cited severe flooding caused by a recent storm as a primary factor in the decision.

A spokesperson for Greggs told the South Wales Argus, “Our shop in Monmouth will be closing as part of our continuous review of our shop estate, which includes relocating shops and expanding into new locations. We would like to thank local customers and the community for their support over the years.”

The Monmouth store had been one of the busiest in the area, making the closure particularly unwelcome among the local community. The bakery, famous for its sausage rolls, pasties, and other baked goods, had recently shut branches on the Strand in London and two locations in Wolverhampton.

Fans are encouraged to visit nearby Greggs outlets in Ross on Wye, Lydney, and the Euro Garage on the A40.

On Google, the Monmouth Greggs is currently listed as ‘temporarily closed,’ which has sparked confusion and concern among locals. Comments on social media reflect the community’s disappointment. One Facebook user said, “I am very surprised to hear this as it was always busy; I would go so far as to say one of the busiest.” Another added, “No, it needs to come back—I love it,” while a third simply lamented, “That is sad news.”

This closure comes at a time when Greggs has recently increased prices on some of its top sellers, adding 5p to sausage rolls and 10p to lattes, as the company struggles with rising wage, energy, and packaging costs. Despite these hikes, Greggs has no current plans for further price increases and anticipates inflation to ease throughout the year, though it admitted sales were softer during the challenging holiday season.
