For the first time in its history, the Green Party is fielding candidates in every one of Birmingham’s 101 wards. This milestone reflects a surge in support and membership, fueled in part by the national profile of the party’s leader, Zack Polanski, who has helped bring the Greens into the national spotlight.
Julien Pritchard, the city’s first Green councillor and current representative for Druids Heath and Monyhull, believes the party is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping Birmingham’s future. Yet, the Greens face stiff competition from the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Reform, and a large contingent of independent and smaller party candidates.
Here is Julien Pritchard’s direct message to Birmingham voters:

“On May 7, Green candidates stand for a city that is fairer, greener, and filled with hope.
“Right now, people across Birmingham are struggling. The cost of living crisis is relentless, yet our Labour-run council has failed to offer much-needed support, instead driving Council Tax up by 25% over three years. Meanwhile, essential services are being cut, bins overflow, roads are riddled with potholes, and social housing waits stretch endlessly.
“For too long, our city has been neglected. National politics has only compounded the problems, with both Conservative and Labour governments deepening divisions and slashing vital resources.
“This election offers a clear choice: continue with politics as usual, or embrace genuine hope and real change with the Green Party.
“The Green Party’s momentum is unmistakable. Membership has more than tripled, and we’re gaining ground in national polls. Recent successes, like our win in Manchester’s Gorton & Denton by-election, demonstrate our growing appeal — a trend we’re seeing here in Birmingham too.
“Electing more Green councillors means putting strong advocates in place to champion your neighbourhoods. We have a proven record of tackling housing issues, combating rubbish problems, and protecting community libraries — causes other parties often overlook.
“Our vision includes restoring excellence to waste collection services, ending bin strikes that shame our city, and moving from the bottom to the top of the national recycling league table. We’ll push for local clean-up crews that address flytipping thoroughly, not just superficially, ensuring every part of Birmingham is well cared for.
“We’re committed to investing in roads to fix potholes and broken pavements, making streets safer for children with better lighting and pedestrian crossings, and safeguarding school crossing patrols.
“Protecting community assets like centres, libraries, youth facilities, parks, and green spaces from sell-offs is a priority for us. We will fight for genuinely affordable social housing, tenant support, and enforcement against exploitative landlords.
“Ethical governance matters to us — we will insist that council investments steer clear of war, genocide, and human rights abuses, whether in Gaza or anywhere else.
“We understand the hardship many face, and that’s why we’ll explore ways to ease the burden, including reviewing council tax support and expanding relief for those struggling.
“The best ideas for Birmingham come from its people, not behind closed doors. We pledge to involve residents in deciding how council tax is spent, ensuring transparency and accountability.
“Above all, we stand for every community, promoting unity against division.
“This election is an opportunity to choose a new path — one of inclusion, hope, and meaningful change. Vote Green on May 7 and help give Birmingham the future it deserves.”
