Greece Issues Red Weather Alert as Storm Erminio Threatens UK Easter Tourists

UK tourists heading to Greece for Easter holidays have been warned to brace for severe weather as Storm Erminio barrels into the region. The Greek State Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued red weather alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and possible hailstorms across several parts of the country.

The storm is expected to impact most regions on Thursday, bringing prolonged intense rainfall and violent thunderstorms. Areas under red alert include eastern Peloponnese, Central Greece, Evia, Thessaly, the Sporades Islands, Attica, and the Dodecanese. An orange warning is also in place for the Cyclades and the eastern Aegean islands.

In Crete, adverse weather conditions forced the rerouting of three flights destined for Iraklio, as reported by the state news agency ANA. Strong winds have also led to the suspension of ferry services, notably the Rio-Antirrio route, and caused cancellations or diversions of flights in regions including Chania and Heraklion due to poor visibility.

Temperature forecasts predict a drop to around 9°C inland, 11°C along the coast, and as low as 5°C in the mountainous areas. The weekend will remain unsettled with cloudy skies, local showers, and isolated thunderstorms, with temperatures falling below seasonal averages.

In response to the storm, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security has introduced emergency labor measures to protect workers. Outdoor work is now mandatorily suspended from 6 pm to 10 pm across multiple regions including Attica, Central Greece, Thessaly (including the Sporades), the Peloponnese, South Aegean, and northern Greece.

These developments are expected to cause significant disruption and chaos for British holidaymakers seeking Easter sunshine in Greece, emphasizing the need for travelers to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
