Gray Returns, Ducksch Dilemma, and Defensive Choices: Birmingham City Predicted XI vs Preston

Birmingham City face Preston North End this evening in a Championship clash that may not grab headlines but carries significance for mid-table positioning.

While teams at the top chase promotion or at the bottom fight relegation, Blues and Preston meet with less at stake, yet the three points could determine placement between 10th and 17th in the standings—a range separated by just a single point heading into this round.

For manager Chris Davies, securing a finish closer to 10th is important, not only for pride but as a signal to owners Knighthead about the club’s future direction.

Davies has experimented with various lineups this season but has recently settled on a back four, reaping the reward of two strong defensive displays. The main fitness concern is whether Bright Osayi-Samuel can recover from a dead leg to retain his spot at right-back. If he’s sidelined, Ethan Laird provides a reliable alternative without compromising defensive solidity.

Another option is Tomoki Iwata at right-back, which would allow Paik Seung-ho to partner Jhon Solis in midfield, potentially enhancing ball control and creativity compared to the more physical Solis-Iwata combination. Given Iwata’s spectacular goal against Hull, Davies might prefer to keep him in midfield.

The attack remains the biggest question. Blues showed improvement with Marvin Ducksch and Demarai Gray on the pitch, particularly after Ducksch replaced Jay Stansfield—whose recent goal drought is a concern—and Gray subbed in for Ibrahim Osman.

While Gray’s inclusion seems likely, Davies’ ongoing support for Stansfield and the recent off-field issues involving Ducksch suggest the manager may stick with Stansfield. Davies is aiming to build a partnership between Stansfield and Priske, and after some encouraging performances together, it could be counterproductive to alter the setup following a single subdued match.

Predicted Birmingham City XI (4-2-3-1): Beadle; Laird, Neumann, Klarer, Wagner; Solis, Iwata; Vicente, Stansfield, Gray; Priske
