Grandmother Banned from Birmingham City Centre Urged to Stop Shoplifting After Being Caught at Primark

A 66-year-old grandmother and serial shoplifter, Debra Shaw, who has been banned from Birmingham city centre, was recently caught shoplifting at Primark, prompting a court to urge her to stop her repeated offences. Shaw’s criminal record includes over 150 offences, reflecting a long history of theft.

At Birmingham Magistrates' Court, it was revealed that Shaw’s latest incidents involved stealing a £50 Ted Baker set from Boots on December 1, followed by breaching her city centre ban just two weeks later. She admitted to both theft and violating a criminal behaviour order (CBO).

Prosecutor Owen Beale explained that although Shaw was not formally interviewed, she confessed to the theft, stating, “I’m guilty anyway there is no point in lying” and showed cooperation with authorities. Shaw has previously received conditional discharges for similar offences.

Judge Smith expressed concern for Shaw’s safety within the community, noting the complexities surrounding her behaviour. A probation officer reported that Shaw is engaged with a women’s support centre and requires assistance in decision-making and managing the consequences of her actions.

Defence lawyer Alexandra Youster acknowledged Shaw’s repeated court appearances and awareness of the risks of imprisonment tied to her crimes. On February 5, Judge Smith deferred sentencing, allowing Shaw to continue participating in an intensive supervision court (ISC) order aimed at supporting rehabilitation.

The judge emphasized, “You have been on an ISC order for a very long time, sometimes it’s worked, sometimes it’s failed. Sometimes you have engaged. You are at a time in your life where you do need to go to the women’s centre and seek support. You need to stop this.”
