Grandfather Dies After One Punch at Work Christmas Party in Midlands Pub

A 66-year-old grandfather, David Darke, lost his life after being struck by a single punch outside a Midlands pub while attending his work Christmas party.

On 21 December, David was celebrating the festive season with colleagues at the Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire. Just six days later, he died in hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.

The tragic event unfolded when David intervened to assist a younger man, Nathan Gothard, 37, after a confrontation. Court proceedings revealed that Gothard had been “making unwelcome advances and remarks” toward women in the group, which sparked a dispute. Although Gothard was initially escorted from the premises, he returned and became involved in a fight that led to David being assaulted.

Leicester Crown Court found Gothard not guilty of murder but convicted him of manslaughter, sentencing him to 10 years in prison.

David’s family expressed their grief and frustration following the sentencing, stating: “Our family has finally seen the person responsible for Dave’s death held accountable. However, no sentence can truly compensate for the loss we have suffered.

“Gothard was a disruptive presence at the local pub, which is frequented by Dave’s colleagues during work events. Dave’s only ‘offense’ that evening was standing up against someone harassing the women and provoking others.

“Dave was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He was a strong, hardworking man who lived with integrity and respect. An accomplished craftsman, there was very little he couldn’t fix or build. Looking forward to retirement, he was eager to enjoy life with his family.

“This tragedy was completely avoidable. Had Gothard simply left when asked, Dave would still be alive today.

“We endured the unimaginable—watching him on life support before ultimately turning it off, and reliving every painful moment during the trial. No family should ever have to endure that.

“Even in death, Dave continued to help others through organ donation, giving at least four people a chance at life. This demonstrates the incredible person he was.

“We thank Senior Investigating Officer Kev Hames and his team from Leicestershire Police, our barrister, the QMC Hospital staff, and our extended family and friends for their unwavering support during this devastating time.

“Nothing will bring Dave back. Our loss has changed our family forever, and we will carry this grief for the rest of our lives.”
