Good News for Walsall as Extra Council Funding Confirmed

Walsall Council leader Councillor Mike Bird has welcomed the government’s announcement of a new multi-year funding settlement that promises to transform local authority financing. Revealed just before Christmas by the minister for housing, communities, and local government, this overhaul marks the first significant change in over a decade.

Under the new plan, Walsall Council’s spending power is set to increase by 28.5% over the next three years, based on an assumed annual council tax rise of 4.99%. This boost offers much-needed financial certainty for future planning amidst growing demand for essential services.

Councillor Bird acknowledged ongoing challenges, especially in adult social care, children’s services, and provision for Special Educational Needs (SEN). However, he expressed optimism that secure, long-term funding will enable the council to meet community needs effectively. “This funding settlement is a positive step forward for Walsall,” he said. “It provides clarity and stability at a time when demand for services is rising. We are committed to strong financial management to make a real difference locally.”

MP Alison McGovern described the settlement as a true turning point, addressing the outdated funding system that has long challenged councils. The enhanced support aims to empower local authorities like Walsall to better serve their communities and plan with confidence for the future.
