Former Aston Villa captain Andy Townsend has expressed strong confidence in John McGinn and Ollie Watkins, predicting they will be standout performers for their national teams at this summer’s World Cup.
This will be the World Cup debut for McGinn, Watkins, Ezri Konsa, and Morgan Rogers, while Matty Cash and Emi Martínez will make their second appearances after representing their countries in Qatar in 2022. Additional Villa stars Lucas Digne and Victor Lindelöf will compete for France and Sweden, and Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans will be part of Belgium’s squad in the United States.
Coming off a triumphant Europa League victory, these Villa players enter the tournament with momentum and confidence.

As captain of Unai Emery’s Europa League-winning squad, John McGinn is set to face Brazil, Haiti, and Morocco in the group stage, leading Scotland’s push for a knockout round spot. Townsend praised McGinn’s management under Emery, noting smart substitutions preserved his impact late in games.
“John’s been outstanding. Emery’s man-management was spot on—bringing John off around the 70th minute in tight games to keep him fresh showed how vital he is,” Townsend said. “Everyone at Villa sees how good he is, but opponents also know he’s clever, versatile, and hardworking. He plays anywhere across the midfield and always puts the team first. That’s what makes him a great captain.”
Townsend also highlighted McGinn’s crucial goals toward the end of the season and in the Europa League. “He’s no longer underrated but a hugely respected player who could be Scotland’s key figure in this World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Ollie Watkins is expected to support England’s star striker Harry Kane. Townsend believes Watkins brings valuable qualities off the bench for the Three Lions.
“I don’t see England winning without Kane, who is the best striker in the world right now. But what I admire about Ollie Watkins is his resilience. Even when left out and going through a dry spell, he never complained or lost focus. He kept his head down and worked hard, and that perseverance paid off,” Townsend explained.
Watkins’ goals late in the season boosted his confidence and earned him a spot in the England squad. “He showed Thomas Tuchel he can perform at the highest level, just like when he scored that vital goal off the bench at Qatar 2022. He might not start, but if England need a goal late on, I’d back Watkins to make a difference over anyone else.”
With their determination and talent, both McGinn and Watkins have strong cases to become decisive players on football’s biggest stage this summer.
