A pregnant black cat named Nadia was discovered abandoned in a dog crate within a Birmingham alleyway in Maypole, caring for five kittens that were not her own. Despite the tragic loss of her newborn kittens, Nadia has survived the ordeal and is now recovering well at the Cats Protection West Midlands Cat Centre in Hollywood, where she and her surviving kittens are waiting for new homes.
Nadia, approximately four years old, was found heavily pregnant and nurturing five four-week-old kittens, in addition to two older kittens aged about five and six months seeking shelter alongside her. A volunteer from the Cats Protection Centre spotted the group and swiftly intervened to ensure their safety.
Regrettably, Nadia’s three kittens born at the centre did not survive, likely due to the stress from abandonment. One of the older kittens also passed away, leaving the remaining kitten, Maui, needing special care and understanding.

“It’s been an incredibly hard journey for Nadia,” explains Paula Beswick, deputy centre manager. “She’s a gentle-natured cat who is now ready to be pampered and cared for as she should have been from the outset.”
Nadia enjoys sunny spots, treats, and plenty of attention, and staff believe she would thrive in a home where her owners spend much of their time with her. The five surviving kittens-named Nina, Navy, Noah, Nolan, and Nico, aged eight weeks-were hand-reared to allow Nadia to focus on her pregnancy. They are a playful and friendly litter, with most being tabby or tabby-and-white, except Noah, who is black. They will soon be ready for adoption and would benefit from a home with plenty of activity and outdoor space.
Maui, one of the older kittens left, shared a close bond with Fiji, another cat who sadly had to be euthanised due to multiple severe illnesses. Paula notes, “Maui is a friendly but timid boy who needs an understanding owner and a quiet home, ideally without children or other pets. Outdoor access will be great once he feels settled.”

Paula emphasises the importance of seeking help before abandoning pets: “It is never acceptable to dump cats.
