Future of Sedgley Health Centre Secured with Dudley Council’s £1.85m Purchase of Ladies Walk

The future of Sedgley’s Ladies Walk health centre, once threatened with closure, has been secured following Dudley Council’s strategic purchase of the building for £1.85 million. This move not only safeguards existing NHS services but also paves the way for additional community amenities, including a new housing hub and police offices.

Previously, tensions arose among local politicians due to concerns over delayed lease renewal negotiations. Rather than continuing to lease the property at an estimated cost of £380,000 annually over 25 years, the council opted to buy the centre outright from its owners, Aviva. Council leader Cllr Patrick Harley emphasized the financial prudence of the decision, stating that the investment will pay for itself in under five years while also generating rental income from occupants such as the NHS.

Plans for the centre now include housing-related services alongside the retention of current healthcare facilities. Bill Etheridge, Conservative candidate for Sedgley, hailed the purchase as a major win for taxpayers, estimating savings exceeding £7 million. Etheridge also expressed hope for expanding the centre’s role by introducing a police hub and encouraging businesses to rent additional space.

The centre’s lease expiry in March 2026 had triggered concerns earlier in 2025, with local councillor Shaun Keasey lamenting the risk of closure after just 25 years in operation. Dudley MP Sonia Kumar also voiced worries about potential loss of NHS provisions, noting that relocation was not a viable alternative. The council’s decisive action has now removed that uncertainty, reaffirming the centre’s vital role in the Sedgley community.
