Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants are being reminded of the importance of promptly reporting any changes that may affect their benefits, as overpayments have surged dramatically. Recent Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) statistics reveal a “statistically significant increase” in PIP overpayments, largely caused by claimants not notifying the department about improvements in their health.
Between 2023/2024 and 2024/2025, PIP overpayments soared from £90 million to £330 million. The DWP attributes £190 million of this to claimant error, while fraud accounted for £100 million, showing a substantial rise. The remaining £40 million resulted from administrative errors by the DWP.
When claimants report a change—typically health deterioration—this triggers an unscheduled review of their case. Approximately half of these reviews maintain the same payment level, around 40% result in an increased award, and a small fraction see reductions or benefit cessation.

Scheduled reviews also occur at the end of a fixed-term PIP award. Data indicates that two-thirds to three-quarters of claimants keep their current rate following these reviews, while about 12% receive higher payments, and others experience reductions or stoppages.
Claimants must immediately contact the PIP enquiry line to report changes such as going into a care home or any alterations to personal details, including name, address, phone number, bank account, or doctor. Reporting these changes ensures benefit accuracy and helps prevent overpayments, which may lead to repayment demands, penalties, or legal action if neglected or falsified.
If you move from England or Wales to Scotland, you must contact the enquiry line and submit a new claim for the Adult Disability Payment (ADP), Scotland’s equivalent to PIP.
To report any changes, call the PIP enquiry line at 0800 121 4433, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Support is available if you need someone to help make the call, provided you are with them during the conversation.
Staying vigilant and proactive in reporting changes is essential to maintain the integrity of your PIP award and avoid complications arising from overpayments.
