Four West Midlands Towns Among England’s Least Favoured Places to Live, Residents Say

A recent national survey has revealed that four areas in the West Midlands are perceived by their own residents as some of the worst places to live in England.

The study, conducted by Rightmove, gathered opinions from locals about their towns and cities, focusing on factors such as the quality of local high streets, green spaces, and overall community satisfaction.

The results showed that three West Midlands towns rank among the bottom 20 nationally. Walsall was highlighted as the least desirable place to live in the region and the fifth worst in the UK overall. Residents expressed concerns about the town, citing issues including high crime rates and economic deprivation.

Walsall placed 216th out of 220 towns surveyed, with Birmingham also scoring poorly at 209th. Dudley and Wolverhampton were ranked 201st and 200th respectively.

Conversely, Leamington Spa emerged as the happiest place to live in the Midlands, placed 12th nationally. The study suggests that residents of more affluent areas tend to report higher levels of satisfaction, likely influenced by greater wealth, better living standards, and lower crime.

In contrast, families living in urban, industrial towns within the Black Country may face more challenges, such as declining local infrastructure and issues with antisocial behaviour.

At the top of the national list, Skipton in North Yorkshire was named the happiest place to live in the UK.

Rightmove commented on the findings, stating: “Each year we ask thousands of people across Great Britain how they feel about where they live. Feeling happy at home isn’t just about the property. It’s also about the wider area, the community, and how close you are to the things which matter most.”
