The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued an urgent travel warning for UK tourists planning to visit Bolivia. Starting May 6, 2026, Bolivia’s interprovincial transport union in La Paz announced an indefinite strike, leading to significant disruptions on key travel routes.
The FCDO advises travelers to avoid all road travel on heavily affected routes, including:
- La Paz to Copacabana (Lake Titicaca)
- La Paz to Oruro
- La Paz to Uyuni via Oruro
- La Paz to Rurrenabaque
Passengers who purchase tickets labeled ‘condicionado’ should be aware that these services cannot guarantee arrival at the intended destination. The FCDO urges all travelers to check local advice before setting off and to avoid crossing any blockades to ensure personal safety.

Despite the roadblocks and strikes, flights within Bolivia are operating normally. British nationals currently caught in blockades or needing urgent consular assistance should contact the UK consulate immediately via phone or WhatsApp at +591 7678 8849.
The unrest stems from widespread protests led by the Bolivian Workers Confederation (COB) and other unions, demanding reforms in agricultural, educational, and labor policies. Since Saturday, protests have included highway blockades and marches, with the COB calling for an indefinite general strike to pressure the government.
Mario Argollo, Secretary-General of COB, emphasized the strike’s persistence: “Starting today, a general, indefinite and active strike is declared, until the government understands the people’s demands.” Alongside, the teachers’ union is pushing for a publicly funded free education system.
The situation remains volatile, and the FCDO advises travelers and residents to stay informed of local developments and heed official guidance to avoid disruption and ensure safety.
