Foreign Office Warns UK Tourists of Indefinite Public Transport Strike in Bolivia

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a travel advisory concerning an indefinite public transport strike in Bolivia’s capital and surrounding areas. The strike has severely impacted the availability of transportation in La Paz and the broader department.

According to a statement released on March 26, public transport across La Paz is currently halted due to the strike. Access to the airport is disrupted, and the city’s cable car system remains the only operational public transport option, though it faces long queues.

The main bus terminal in La Paz has been closed, suspending intercity bus services throughout Bolivia. Additionally, the country is experiencing widespread shortages of petrol and diesel, leading to long lines at fuel stations and potentially further limiting bus and car travel.

The FCDO advises travelers planning to drive in Bolivia to prepare for possible fuel shortages, which may cause extended delays or strand motorists for days. UK drivers should carry both a valid UK driving licence and a 1949 International Driving Permit (IDP), as an IDP cannot be obtained outside the UK.

Travelers are urged to monitor updates closely and consider these disruptions when planning trips within Bolivia.
