Foreign Office Urges UK Tourists to Stay Vigilant Following Explosions in Algeria

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a new travel warning following reports of explosions in Algeria. On Monday, April 13, fresh guidance was released urging British nationals to stay alert after an incident in the town of Blida.

According to the FCDO, an explosion occurred in Blida province, located near the Algerian capital. British travellers in the area are advised to remain vigilant at all times and comply with the instructions of local security authorities.

The explosions coincided with the visit of Pope Leo XIV, who arrived in Algeria on the same day as part of his African tour, invited by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This marks the first papal visit to the country.

Details indicate that two suicide bombings targeted Blida province. The first attack reportedly hit the security directorate in Blida city’s center, followed shortly by a second suicide bombing near a food industry facility. Initial French media reports suggest two attackers detonated themselves near the city’s central police station, killing themselves and injuring at least one police officer. Algerian officials have yet to confirm details.

In light of these events, the FCDO emphasizes that travelling against its advice may invalidate travel insurance. It strongly advises against all travel within 30 kilometers of Algeria’s borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, and Tunisia—specifically in the provinces of Illizi, Ouargla, and the Chaambi mountains area. Travel to areas within 30 kilometers of the border with Tunisia is advised against unless essential.

For those who choose to travel, the FCDO recommends researching destinations thoroughly and securing comprehensive travel insurance that covers the itinerary, planned activities, and potential emergency expenses.

The situation remains fluid, and travellers are urged to monitor updates and follow local security advice closely to ensure their safety.
