Foreign Office Updates Travel Advice for Nine Countries Including Popular European Destination

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel advice for nine countries, including a well-known European destination, amid ongoing global uncertainties. Updated guidance now applies to the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Belgium, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Iran, Bahrain, and Colombia.

These changes come as many UK travelers plan Easter holidays abroad, seeking rest and relaxation. However, escalating conflicts, notably in the Middle East involving Iran, the US, and Israel, have caused widespread disruption, including grounded flights at airports such as Birmingham.

The FCDO highlighted the impact of Tropical Cyclone Maila, which is affecting parts of the Solomon Islands with severe weather conditions including heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and dangerous sea states. The cyclone is progressing westward towards Papua New Guinea, with the Western Province Islands, Choiseul, and Isabel Provinces particularly affected. Fiji faces similar weather-related advisories.

Travel to Colombia has also been affected, with the FCDO now advising against all but essential travel to the municipality of Jamundí in Valle del Cauca. The warning extends to other regions of Colombia due to security concerns.

Concerns about ongoing strike action have been raised for Djibouti, where strikes have occurred sporadically over the past year, potentially causing travel disruptions with little prior notice.

Ethiopia faces fuel shortages nationwide, leading to long queues and possible delays, especially outside the capital, Addis Ababa. Travelers are urged to coordinate closely with tour operators and allow extra travel time.

With the upcoming Ethiopian presidential elections scheduled for 10 April, the FCDO advises avoiding large gatherings and demonstrations and following local authority instructions.

Regarding Iran, the FCDO warns that regional tensions are intensifying, posing serious security risks. Consequently, it advises against all travel to the country at this time.

In Bahrain, authorities report ongoing airspace closures and possible short-notice shutdowns of the King Fahd Causeway to Saudi Arabia. Travelers are cautioned to consider departing if safe. Those traveling by road should verify entry requirements and vehicle ownership regulations for Saudi Arabia to avoid denial of entry. It is also advised to maintain access to emergency supplies and essential medications during travel. The FCDO stresses that travel within or out of Bahrain carries inherent risks under current conditions.

These updates emphasize the importance of staying informed and prepared as global and regional situations evolve rapidly affecting international travel.
